Message from the Stars 2013 Co-Chairs:
February 28, 2013
Dear Friends of Stars in Our Eyes:
For ten years the Rotary Club of La Jolla has had the pleasure of working with students, teachers, and administrators in the La Jolla Schools to produce “Stars in Our Eyes”. The program has been a wonderful experience for our Rotary Club as well as the students who participated in the performing and visual arts components.
Recently, members of our club met to discuss the future of “Stars”. During the meeting we discussed many of the challenges facing our club regarding this program. It was the consensus of the group that we should quit while we are ahead and not move forward with future productions of “Stars”. Our decision was not based on one singular issue; rather it was based on a number of circumstances that challenge our ability to produce this program.
When we started this program ten years ago, the Rotary Club of La Jolla’s goal was to ensure perpetual support for student scholarships through the funds raised by “Stars”. This goal has been met. The decision to discontinue “Stars” has no impact on the Rotary Club of La Jolla’s ability to continue the college scholarship program at its current rate of roughly $150,000 annually.
I know a number of Teachers, Administrators and Rotarians have been involved with “Stars” year after year. It has been a wonderful way for all of us to work together and support our students. It has also been a great way for us to see and share the great work taking place in the La Jolla Schools. It has been my personal honor and privilege to work with you. Thank you for all you have done to make this program so successful. You are amazing.
With gratitude,
Russell King
